Is there any chance for old tiles to be grouted? August 24, 2022

Certainly, the old tiles can also be grouted. However, there’s a prerequisite that there must be a gap left between tiles.

It’s recommended to use the cleaning machine to clean the gap before waxing and grouting, sort of construction steps.

Grouting construction for old tiles is different from that for new ones. Here are some cautions:

1, gap is too dirty

The difference between new tiles and old ones is the old tiles have been used for a longer time. There’ll be dust accumulated in the gap. If you need to do grouting, make sure the gap of tiles is fully cleaned. In addition, the gap of tiles is different from one another and there’s cement filled in, which you need to use professional grinding machine to clean.

2,tile surface is badly worn

The tile surface could be badly worn after years of use and some glossy tiles are evenly scratched badly, so we need to use tape or wax onto the tiles before grouting. In this case, the excess grout after construction of new grout can be easily cleaned.

3, damp bottom of tile

Due to natural or artificial damages of the tiles after a long time use, the bottom of tiles will become damp. The tile gap or bottom must be kept dry before grouting.

You can use a tissue to test if the gap of tiles is wet and take the tissue out after 24 hours. If the tissue becomes soft or wet, it means the gap is damp and the gap should be dried before grouting. If there’s no change to the tissue, the gap is dry and new grouting construction can be performed directly.

4, whether the tile is loose

After a long time, the cement of bottom of tiles shrinks obviously. It’s normal that the ceramic tiles get loose. However, we cannot apply grouting on these kind of tiles. Even if the tile grout can stabilize the ceramic tiles and prevent it from loosening, the curing effect and adhesion of grout will be affected to some extent. It’s suggested to stabilize the loose tiles before regrouting.

Regrouting for the old tiles is easy if the above problems are noted. Also, choose tile grout of good quality and match suitable colors for the grout and tiles and the old tiles could become beautiful as the new ones.
